Abstract: The CMS collaboration at CERN has already collected a large amount of data from the high-energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC accelerator and published a large amount of papers, including the observation of the Higgs boson. But much more is expected from the future. Prof. Roberto Carlin will describe the experiment and some recent results, and then describe the plans for the short and long term future, in particular focusing on the large scale detector upgrade planned to match the HL-LHC upgrade, and the many technical challenges that have to be addressed.
