报告摘要: Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) that run on hydrogen are one of the most promising alternatives to meet the future needs for power supply in portable, residential and transportation applications. These applications rely on safe storage and transportation of hydrogen. Hydrogen stored in a chemical form as liquid organic compounds and released in-situ on demand through efficient catalytic processes at low temperature is highly desirable. Specifically, methanol, an inexpensive bulk chemical, can reform with water and produce three hydrogen molecules (CH3OH(l)+ H2O(l)= 3H2+ CO2, △H°= + 131 kJ/mol) with high gravimetric density of 18.8 wt%. Here we demonstrate a low temperature (150-190oC) base-free hydrogen production process based on aqueous-phase reforming of methanol (APRM) using a novel atomically dispersed Pt/α-MoC catalyst. The average turnover frequency (ATOF) reaches 18046 h-1, which is by far the most active APRM catalyst reported at low temperature (<200 oC). The exceptional hydrogen production activity comes from the outstanding ability of α-MoC for water dissociation and the unique synergy between Pt1 and α-MoC for methanol activation and successive reforming processes. We estimate that a catalyst unit containing around 6 grams of Pt could meet the requirements for powering a fuel cell vehicle at mild conditions, showing promise for commercial applications.
